Berlin: German Chancellor Angela Merkel demanded that Russian opposition politician Alexei Navalny be immediately released from jail.

She said this during a briefing on Thursday, January 21, answering a journalist's question about the arrest of Alexei Navalny.

“Yes, I demand the immediate release of Navalny, like the entire government of the Federal Republic of Germany, we believe that this would be absolutely true and necessary", - the Chancellor stressed.

As previously reported, the members of the European Parliament intend to consider a resolution demanding to stop the construction of the Nord Stream 2 pipeline due to the arrest of Russian opposition politician Alexei Navalny.

Recall that the court chose a preventive measure for Alexei Navalny in the form of arrest for 30 days. The meeting took place in the 2nd police department of the Ministry of Internal Affairs of the city of Khimki, where Navalny was taken from Sheremetyevo airport, where he was detained while going through border control on January 18.
